We were in Las Vegas for a conference and I was there with several work colleagues. We were staying at the Mirage, but it wasn’t really the Mirage – it was this weird hotel that was a combination of an 80s-era Vegas hotel that was showing its age and some sort of super resort. For example, I was staying on the 71st floor, and there was a staircase that led directly to the massive indoor pool on the 70th floor. There was also an outdoor wave pool that I think was on my floor as well.
Somehow it is decided that we are going to enter a Texas Hold Em tournament, although instead of in a big room with multiple tables, we were in our own room. And it wasn’t every man for himself, it was teams – 3 on 3 – and I was paired with a work colleague (we'll call him James) and someone else who was either my friend father or a friend of a friend (we'll call him Steve). Anyway, somehow I got there a little late and when I got there we were already down a little bit. We play for a little while, and somehow it comes down to a hand between one of our opponents and Steve. He is going for a straight and decides to go all in. Our opponents call and they turn over their cards – it is a push. No problem, split the pot and it’s fine. Except this guy is convinced to go into “overtime” where each person gets 1 card – and it’s highest card wins, and not related to the hand in general (I don't think this even exists). Before I could voice my objection, the cards are turned over – they get a 6, we get a 3, and we lose. I am really angry.
I then walk back to my room and run into a different work colleague who I tell the story to and also ask him about dinner plans. Then I go watch some football and talk to my sister on the phone. Was telling her the hotel was showing its age and she was telling me how her friend got married out there and got totally ripped off and they promised this awesome room but turned out not to be that nice.
Then I woke up.
